However, after I start the DB, I hit the following error;

-bash-4.1$ psql

psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory

Is the server running locally and accepting

connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?

Is PostgreSQL up and running ? What does "pg_ctl -D <data directory> status" say ?

Or, if you have enabled logging, does postgresql logs say anything ?
