You are doing it the wrong way, see below for details:

Basically this:

cur.execute("""insert into bbalup(some_text, some_date)
values(%(some_text)s, %(some_date)s)""" % (sample))

should be:

cur.execute("insert into bbalup(some_text, some_date)
values(%(some_text)s, %(some_date)s)",  sample)
