Can´t connect to postmaster

Hi all!

I have managed to compile Postgres 6.4 on an Indigo2 with IRIX 6.5.
I can start the postmaster from the postgres account with:

    postmaster -i &

but when I try then try the following:

    psql template 1

the server says: IpcSemaphoreCreate: semctl failed (Bad address) id=1

Whate does this mean?
And how can I make this work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
