I thing better is use some cast method instead cast by function call:
test=# SELECT CAST( now() AS date ), now()::date, 'now'::date::timestamp;
now | now | timestamptz
------------+------------+------------------------
2002-03-27 | 2002-03-27 | 2002-03-27 00:00:00+01
