This may have been better posted in the advocacy list but I am not a subscriber. We recently purchased Dreamweaver MX and I was a little surprised to find that one of its pre-defined scripting systems is PHP + MySQL. I haven't done much exploring of what is actually offered but wondered whether any one had tried to convince Macromedia to provide a PHP + PostgreSQL or at least a PHP + anydb. If the support for MySQL is in the form of an Extension, is there a PostgreSQL equivalent as I have been contacted by one of our clients who has said, "Do we povide MySQL ?", we dont. "Oh! I am teaching myself PHP + MySQL using Dreamweaver and I wanted you to host the site" :-( I use PHP + PosgreSQL alot. I'd love to be able to help people who have the impression that MySQL is all there is !! Usually Macromedia avoids to support anything good :-) You can however try to script the support into Dreamweaver using Javascript (most of DWs functionallity is written in Javascript) Regards Tino Wildenhain

PHP has a shortcoming of NOT having a unified interface to "any" DB. MySQL uses one set of function calls, while PgSQL another. Yes, of course they could add support for another (very popular) DB. I know there are build options to fuse some Java support in, but that is, IMHO, a waste of time and effort - not to mention resources. Nix.

The closet thing PHP has is PEAR - it has the Dataobject concept and is as close to "neutral" as PHP gets. A long time ago, I wrote a "DB Neutral set of routines which works with Oracle, Postgresql and, untested, MySQL. That just seemed to be the easiest thing to do, but I have not tried to plug it into Dreamweaver. There are several libraries such as PEAR::DB and ADODB (http://php.weblogs.com/ADODB) available, although none has achieved similar universality to Perl's DBI. Ian Barwick barwick@gmx.net

I have used it several times when I wasn't sure which database was going to be used. I suppose in addition to asking my question, was the unasked one. If PostgreSQL is to gain broader appeal, then developers like Macromedia need to be conviced to either make their products 'database neutral' by providing a generic hook or providing more than one of the popular alternatives. As it is, there are a bunch of web designers using DW that go straight for a PHP+MySQL solution because that is what DW supports :-( PostgreSQL doesn't even get a look in. I haven't tried the combination PHP + PostgreSQL but my efforts to get ColdFusion + PostgreSQL supported were rather unsuccessful so far. Your best bet is to write the necessary extensions yourself. I do most of my development using dreamweaver and the free extenstion - to dreamweaver - PHAkt - from interakt http://www.interakt.ro/products/PHAkt/index.php It supports multiple databases including my favorite - PostgreSQL - using ADOdb. True, you need to change commands at PHP, while DBD requires only the change of a parameter. Doing what he has to do, OP might try to use the standard binary distribution of PHP at http://www.php.net/downloads.php -PHP does offer PG-support through an extention module- and use a PHP extension for Macromedia Dreamweaver MX from http://www.interakt.ro/products/PHAkt/ Just for what it might be worth, Hans

If not, then Macromedia has no reason to support anything from it. This doesn't mean that your code is bad - it is most likely the opposite. Nix.

It has some serious performance advantages over the PEAR library because it is a module (written in C) rather than a bunch of PHP classes.
