OT: mailing list delays

There's another post with someone who hasn't been seeing any messages. I'm
getting stuff mixed together from the last few days. Is this my problem or is
anyone else seeing it too?

Postings by those note on the lists (ie. reading through newsgroups) get
put into a queue to be moderated ... today, I went through ~400 messages,
of which <100 were legit (non spam) postings ... when I came in on Monday,
there were >1000 messages to weed through ...

I try to go through it daily during the week, but there are days where it
just isn't possible, so it gets delayed a day or three ...

Perhaps you could share the moderation workload with someone?

(I'm not volunteering, but I bet there's people out there who'd be
willing to help.)

wow, are you rejecting mail from people not subscribed to the list? If
those spam messages are coming from subscribed emails, perhaps you can
unsubscribe (or ban?) them from the list when they send spam. Over time
it should curb your workload.

I assume the spam is coming from non-subscribers. That's how they get
into that queue.

I remember years ago when spam from newsgroups found their way
into the lists. Despite the delay in approved messages, I just
wanted to voice a "Thank You" for filtering. It is a job which
does not get much praise, so I thought I'd change that trend...

P.S.: This tip should be removed...

No legit message is rejected, only spam, or duplicates ... any other
messages I just scan for appropriate content and approve ...

in most cases, I believe that those that get 'stuck' in the queue are
those reading the newsgroups ... a simple 'subscribe' to the list and a
'set nomail' would allow them to read newsgroups and post to the lists ...

I am volunteering if there's a way for me to help out. I run through the lists
most mornings anyway. Can't guarantee *every* day, but at least 90% of the
time.

Perhaps a weekly "META: Guide to using the PostgreSQL Lists" post would reduce
the volume a bit.

Well, since these folks aren't subscribed to the list, this might not
work as well as we'd hope (kind of like how people keep asking questions
that are on the FAQ) though I'm certainly not against the idea.
Something a bit more encompassing would be a flat rejection of all posts
from non-subscribed posters (with instructions on how to subscribe and
set the option for nomail).

If someone wants to write it ... ? :)

Actually, setting up a cronjob to just send such to the newsgroups
themselves would probably do the trick ...

I'll run up a draft Monday and post it to pgsql-docs Mon pm or Tue am.
