I have spent several days trying tofind the cause of this on google,
but I am stumped.

Thsi is the article I was using as a guideline:
http://www.sitepoint.com/article/1233

I am running on Windows 2000 professional. ipc-daemon2 seems to start
fien in the service window.

The problem is when I log into windows as postgres. I rin the initdb
-D command, it runs through its checks and then says initdb fails
saying there is a lock file on the existing PID. There is no
postmaster process runnign. I delete out the data directory to make
sure there is no pid file, rerun initdb -D again and same thing.

The versions of the software are the latest. I just downloaded them a
coupel days ago.

Ok, so what documentation should I be looking at for the current
installation instructions?

I'm now going by this:
http://www.tishler.net/jason/software/postgresql/postgresql-7.4.README

I am trying the first simple way to get the program started and if I
can get that, figure I try the NT service route.

When I try to initialize the database, I get:

creating configuration files... ok
creating template1 database in /var/postgresql/data/base/1... Signal 12

initdb: failed
initdb: removing data directory "/var/postgresql/data"

I installed the cygwin files, restarted the computer to make sure
nothing was running and then went through the steps and I still get
this. I am really lost, especially since no log files are generating.

Hello,

The webpage listed below is not current. ipc-daemon2 is no longer used
and cygserver is used in it's place. The readme included with the
postgresql installation has the correct instructions.

Ok then. I've written a tutorial on how to configure postgresql on
Cygwin. I'm soon going to propose the tutorial to be included in the
postgresql docs.
In the meantime, check it out:

I got it working. Thsi time when I removed cygwin, I removed the
registry entries for it also. Restarted the computer and reinstalled
it again. It went liek gold this time with the following
instructions:

1. Install and configure cygserver:

    $ cygserver-config

2. Start cygserver:

    $ cygserver &

3. Initialize PostgreSQL:

    $ initdb -D /var/postgresql/data

4. Start the PostgreSQL postmaster:

    $ postmaster -D /var/postgresql/data &

5. Connect to PostgreSQL:

    $ psql template1

Now that it is working fine, I will set up to do it with a better user
account and as a service.

                     Back to thy punishment,
False fugitive, and to thy speed add wings,
Lest with a whip of scorpions I pursue
Thy ling'ring, or with one stroek fo this dart
Strange horror sieze thee, and pangs unfelt before.
