  Just add a SELECT query like this :

CREATE FUNCTION create_matchmaking_session()
   RETURNS bigint
AS $$
    INSERT INTO matchmaking_session
     VALUES (nextval('seq_matchmaking_session_id'));

    SELECT currval('seq_matchmaking_session_id') as  session_id;

$$ LANGUAGE SQL;
