I also dislike the current topic UX. But removing them sounded controversial at the dev meeting in Montreal. I think it's going to be difficult to have "topic tags" that don't immediately devolve into "categorization noise." If it's possible to do it well, that would be very valuable, so I don't want to discourage people from trying. But I really want the tags to be high-signal, because they take up a lot of UI real estate. --Jacob
