however Is there a way to disable the dashboard stuff – the “remove panel” option doesn’t seem to work that we can see (you can float it but not close it). We are accessing an Amazon RDS a long way away and its quite slow and the server status refreshing function we suspect is slowing things down
Could be doing something wrong – but couldn’t seem to find it.

You cannot remove the dashboard panel, but if you go to File -> Preferences -> Dashboard -> Graphs, you can adjust the refresh intervals to very high values to work around the issue.
