Hi,

Some time ago, Robert Treat asked about a law project in France
against peer-to-peer file exchange that would be so strict as to
forbid the creation of open source software. This law was recently
downed in flames by the French parliament. Interestingly all parties
experencied splits in their ranks.

Most interestingly the parliament reminded the Culture minister (who
was proposing the law) that there already existed a legislation which
had never been used. In particular this legislation clearly
authorises the replication of any media for private purposes.

So what might have been a dangerous time for open source software in
France will probably turn out to be a big gain. This is quite nice
coming on the heels of the rejection by the European Parliament of
American-like software licensing rules.

Cheers

---------------
Francois
