I finally got the time to set this up (fixed the column title).  Here is a
copy of the log data that results from the below java code:

DEBUG:  query: set datestyle to 'ISO'; select getdatabaseencoding()
DEBUG:  ProcessUtility: set datestyle to 'ISO'; select getdatabaseencoding()
DEBUG:  query: <FF><FE>s
ERROR:  parser: parse error at or near "<FF><FE>s"
FATAL 1:  Socket command type e unknown

Does this make sense to anyone?
