We use it in our AIX 4.3.3, and it works perfect.
Just be careful to use some extra options
when configuring the source, like:

--without-readline --without-zlib

or use --with-lib=/your/extra/lib/directory
to point the configure script to find out those
librarys.

We use both 7.4 and 7.3.x in our environment.
