I always got the impression that MySQL started out fast but stripped
down whereas Postgresql started out more featureful but slower.  I think
as MySQL adds features from other RDBMS engines, the performance will
suffer; whereas Postgresql already has all the features and can work
more on optimization and performance impact.  I think in the end this
will hurt MySQL as one of it's main selling points, performance, starts
to suffer and it wil lhelp Postgresql as all the features get faster and
more robust
