For what its worth, when I use the RPM:
readline-4.2-2.src.rpm <-- RedHat 7.2 RPM
instead of
readline-4.2a-2.src.rpm <-- Rawhide 1.0 RPM
all works well. I now have a nice readline-4.2-2.i386.rpm
