for a month or so.

Attached is a patch by Hiroki Kataoka which would
solve all these problems.
If there's no objection, I would commit the patch
after the PostgreSQL 7.1 release.
Thanks for Ludek, Matteo and Johann for their
detailed bug reports, suggestions, discussions,
and useful trial patches ....
