Uh, I still cannot reproduce the failure:
$ psql postgrespsql: FATAL:  password authentication failed for user "postgres"password retrieved from file
"/u/postgres/.pgpass"
$ pg_ctl stopwaiting for server to shut down.... doneserver stopped
$ pg_ctl -l /dev/null startserver starting

(Got to love that new 9.0 pgpass error message.)
