difference between varchar and varchar[] in pgadmin3 (and maybe postgres, too)

what is the difference between varchar and varchar[]
in pgadmin3?  i googled it and nothing turned up.

i'm thinking not much, but i'm twice shy when it comes
to little details that may end causing me much grief
in the future.
