postgresql upgrades -> where's the dump go?

when upgrading from version X to version Y of postgres, the
install appears to dump the data and schema, and then suck it
back in with the new binaries.

[i just tried going from 6.5.3 to 7.0.3potato but the plpgsql.so
module wasn't installed and data types were conflicting, so the
new schema is a bit scrambled -- but if i can get to the
resurrection file, i'll be fine...]

so where's the dump file that gets created? mine had some snags
and i can fix it if i can edit the dump text. (i presume it's a
series of SQL commands...)

anybody know where that file is?
