Totally inappropriate by-line for a major representative of this organization

As a subscriber to many postgresql mailing lists, I received one today
in which Bruce Momjian was respondind to a query from Stefano Nichele
regarding the last_autovacuum field. As always, Bruce's response was
cogent and undoubtedly accurate. What astounded and dismayed me,
however, was his signature byline, which reads:

-
  Bruce Momjian <bruce@momjian.us> http://momjian.us
  EnterpriseDB http://enterprisedb.com

+ If your life is a hard drive, Christ can be your backup. +

Surely, given the multi-cultural/multi-national/multi-theological users/supporters/advocates of the postgresql and
EnterpriseDBdevelopments and distributions, the inappropriateness of this declaration by Mr. Momjian _as a
representativeof EnterpriseDB_ is inexcusable, unless EnterpriseDB itself is positing itself as a secularly-biased
organization.

Regardless, please terminate all further communications from all postgresql and EnterpriseDB mail lists until such time
asthis situation can be corrected.

Really? Really? I'm a Wiccan and I genuinely like Bruce and
appreciate all the work he does for this list. That line is HIS
testimony, it's his truth, and I'm quite happy seeing it go by each
time he writes a message. My girlfriend is Christian (and a few other
things) and I've been to her church, where the pastor welcomed me with
open arms, even knowing I was not Christian.

Leave the guy alone.

Just FYI, searching the mailing list archives, I get 1000+ hits for
"Bruce Momjian" and the word thanks in the history of the mailing
lists. My name gets 782 or so. Scott Runnion doesn't seem to appear
at all.

The last time I checked there is only a requirement that subject
headers need to be on topic. So far us users are free to advocate
anthing we want in our signatures as long as it is not vulgar.

Aside from this, we individually have the freedom to spam-bucket
anyone's emails that astound and dismay us.

One other thought, given the truth of this statement we should
accepted that there are people on this list that fall into any/all of
these categories. What should not be tolerated is the putting down or
belittling people because they fall into anyone these categories.

You do realize that he's signed all his outgoing mail with that since
1998 or so?

Whether it's appropriate to combine that with the EDB signature is
between him and EDB, I would say.

If you mean you want to unsubscribe, feel free. See the directions

Is this his sig in every message, or does he have a random quote thing?
Regardless, my signature block from my personal e-mail account has this
quote:

"Who is more irrational? A man who believes in a God he doesn't see, or
a man who's offended by a God he doesn't believe in?" - Brad Stine

We're talking about a signature block, not the content of the message.
It's not like he replied to a query about pg_dumpall by saying "Acts
10:31 - 'Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, thou
and thy data.'" If you feel it's inappropriate, I would think that the
appropriate channel for complaint would be the company itself, not this
list of its users. And, to forsake this avenue of advice because of a
religious quote in a signature block would be, IMO, a foolish choice.

This really interesting (imho) commentary appeared in papers around the U.S. today.

Scott, please read my signature, find a Latin to English dictionary in
case that you can't read Latin, and meditate about it.

Seriously, I don't mind at all what he believes, or how he signs his
emails: he is a well respected person in the community, and he has the
right to believe whatever he wants to believe and express, politely
and without attacking other people, whatever he feels like expressing.
And it's an atheistic talking here.

I mean, come on... *sighs*

Funny, but I never noticed the signature until someone brought it to notice.

What I have noticed though that Bruce does share a lot of knowledge in the list and though I have not participated or
askedquestions, the mails have helped me a lot.

I bet it is the same for many users like me who regularly check the posts.

So what if he voices his beliefs.
This PC BS is over the top.
If you are so offended by his by-line, to the extent that you want to
remove yourself fomr the mailing lists, then by all means do so.
I am not a Christian (I am Jewish, so I guess that puts me one rung
below Bruce), and am definitely not offended his byline.
If you aspire to his byline, then that is great, and if you don't, that
is great too.

Bruce, as far as I am concerned, you can leave that byline on there
until hell freezes over :)

Interesting read, thanks.

OT: I see that Article 27 (2) appears to run directly counter to open
source software. And it would appear that paragraph is in direct
conflict with paragraph (1) of same article.
