Hm, i can't see any bug here:

template1=# \di+
No relations found.
template1=#

Works also on a database with existing indexes.

Can you please paste the exact message with which
server closes connection. also start psql with -E option

Works for me.  Can you narrow it down a bit?  Perhaps corruption in a
system catalog?  A backtrace from the server coredump might be useful.
