Basically I am wondering how close or if the process has been started
for the driver?
If the code is in a testing stage I would love to test it! Any links
would be great.

I do not know what you mean by 'bytea 2.0'.  However the 7.2 jdbc driver
supports the bytea datatype for get/setBytes and get/setBinaryStream
methods.  You can get the latest 7.2 driver from http://jdbc.postgresql.org.
