Tom, I can't find any cases where 7 or 9 are used to represent the
maximum number of attributes indexed.

Could be they're all gone; I know I've seen some in the past though.

Some brave soul should try increasing the constant and then using
indexes with > 8 columns... better compile -g and --enable-casserts ;-)
