If I try this manually, teh 10e-400 and -10e-400 produce a value of
"0"...are we considering this to be correct?  Or is this a bug?

Bug. On my 980112 snapshot, I get

postgres=> select '-10e400'::float8;
ERROR:  Bad float8 input format '-10e400'

Hope it hasn't changed.
