I have a bunch of 7.4.6 backend processes that show up via
pg_stat_get_db_numbackends(), pg_stat_get_backend_idset(), etc,
but do not show up in ps.  Any clues?

Possibly your statistics collector got "overrun," and the last time it
was successfully updated, they were there?
