could somebody please point me the way to the readme file that contains before, during, and after steps to take when upgrading postgresql server?

I don't think there is a README specifically for this, but here are some relevant links you'll want to read over: http://www.postgresql.org/idocs/index.php?install-upgrading.html http://www.postgresql.org/idocs/index.php?release-7-2.html also you might want to check out the contrib directories in the source, there are some utilities there that might be of interest to you. Also depending on which version you are upgrading to/from there are some articles on http://techdocs.postgresql.org/ that would probably be of interest. What about the INSTALL file in the postgresql source? It's got a section on upgrading...
