Hey, i've just downloaded and installed postgres
from the source code. the version is 7.1.3, i followed
the "Short Version" from the install file:
i think once has to change the owner of /usr/local/pgsql/data
to postgres:postgres before being able to run
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/initdb -D /usr/local/pgsql/data
voila
