== PostgreSQL Weekly News - March 29th 2004 == While there was some subversive discussion about source control programs arching through the mailing lists this week, those with an eye on the CVS repository noticed several interesting changes come down the pike. While not a long list, many were user noticeable and will certainly have an impact on users once 7.5 is released. First up was the replacement of the virtual_host and tcpip_socket GUC's with a unified listen_addresses parameter in postgresql.conf. The default behavior was also switched to now listen on localhost, eliminating the need for the -i postmaster switch in many scenarios. The max_expr_depth parameter was replaced with a max_stack_depth parameter that is measured in kilobytes and checked against actual physical execution stack depth. This implementation gives us an even more bulletproof defense against runaway recursive functions. The "Alter Table Set Without OIDS" command was removed in favor of making "Alter Table Drop Column" able to handle OID columns. This fixes problems with removing OID columns that have dependencies or that were inherited from a parent. Updated code for SSL and Kerberos, which should make both thread safe, was contributed by Manfred Spraul. In other news, the PostgreSQL's global community got a little bit bigger this week as we saw the addition of a Polish Language mailing list available at pgsql@foo-baz.com. The French Community has also moved to a new website, it is now available at http://www.postgresqlfr.org/. One last note, the web team completed the re-import of the techdocs html/php code into CVS this past week. If you are interested in helping out with techdocs development please visit us at the pgweb project on GBorg. == PostgreSQL Product News == PHP 4.3.5 Released http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/8629/ PostgreSQL AutoDoc 1.22 Released http://freshmeat.net/projects/postgresql_autodoc/?branch_id=16831&release_id=155159 PostgreSQL for Solaris@sparc 1.42 http://freshmeat.net/projects/pgsql-solaris/?branch_id=48914&release_id=155368 == PostgreSQL In the News == PostgreSQL + Crystal Reports HOWTO http://techdocs.postgresql.org/techdocs/crystalreports.php Open Source, Part 2 http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=18402795 == Upcoming Events == OSCon: Portland, OR. Small correction: SET WITHOUT OIDS was *not* removed. What was removed was the separate implementation it used to have. Internally it now just does a "DROP COLUMN oid". (Not your fault, there was some confusion on this point on the pgsql-committers list...) regards, tom lane
