PostgreSQL.Org is having a one day technical conference in Portland,
Oregon on October 20th 2007. The conference will be held at Portland
State University, and like PDXPGDay during OSCON there will be a dinner
and party afterward.

If you are near the following metropolitan areas you are 2.5
hours or less away: San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, Portland.
You do not want to miss this conference!

All donations for registration to this conference will be going
*directly* to PostgreSQL.Org via Software in the Public Interest, a
501(c)3 non-profit corporation . For more information please visit
http://www.postgresqlconference.org/

This is wrongly advertised (and dead-linked) on the homepage of
http://www.postgresql.org for 20th September.

Somebody should tidy that up.

Cheers,
Stuart.

What the heck is PostgreSQL.Org? Two things:

First, our domain is postgresql.org. Not PostgreSQL.Org. That just looks
weird and ugly, really. I thought we had previously agreed on not messing
it up like that?

Second, what does that refer to? AFAIK, we "refer to ourselves" as PGDG?
In what way is this other designation different?

I do not agree with you case suggestion.

Nobody knows about PGDG except hackers.

Everyone knows what PostgreSQL.Org is.

O.k. if this is the case then why the heck on the front page does it say:

PGDay, the first European PostgreSQL conference

Or is your complaint that I uppercased the O in .Org?

I think the problem is that you uppercased letters in an url.

As a suggestion, if you want to refer to the PostgreSQL community, why
not just say "the PostgreSQL community"? That way you avoid getting the
guys on their nerves.

Well honestly, I didn't even know it was a problem. I am of no opinion
either way. I can change it on postgresqlconference.org. I was just
trying to be as explicit as possible.

I have changed the PostgreSQL.org (man it is weird to type it that way)
verbiage on the conference site.

It also mentions PGCon Fall 2007 at that URL. PGCon is not until
spring 2008.

No it abbreviates PostgreSQL Conference to PGCon in the registration

PGCon is pretty well recognized as another existing conference. I
suggest another expression would be better suited.

Not to be unkind, but you named your conference an obvious abbreviation.
Considering the audience we can expect that there will be no confusion
between the two.

I think it's a brand, and you can use a different one out of
deference and to avoid confusion. :)

Well I already changed it to Pg Conference, as it really doesn't matter
to me but I would humbly ask then that he remove all references to "The" ;)

I can't... Dan already has The PostgreSQL Conference labeled.

Although please, and this is important. This is not *my* conference. It
a PostgreSQL community conference. All registration donations are being
processed by Software in the Public Interest. All sponsorships are being
processed by Software in the Public Interest. 100% of all donations
collected are being processed by Software in the public interest.

I, and CMD are making zero dollars on this (although we are spending our
fair share to make it happen).

Sincerely,

I hate to tell you that every one of the following are exactly
equivalent for resolution purposes in the DNS:

PostgreSQL.org
postgreSQL.org
PostgreSQL.Org
PostgreSQL.ORG
POSTGRESQL.ORG
postgresql.org
PoStGrEsQl.oRg

And any other VaRIOus caPITalisation you care to think of. DNS is
case-preserving and not case sensitive. If you want people to find
you through the Web, it makes no difference at all.

Sure - they're equivalent for resolution purposes; but not
for human readers. Consider how you would read "ExpertsExchange.com" vs "ExpertSexChange.com".
out loud.

> PostgreSQL.Org

In light of the ExpertsExchange example, how would
you expect that to be pronounced?

And if resolution purposes are all that matters, note that
it seems that
% nslookup 'www.\112ostgresql.org'
gives me the same result.

Yes, that's one of the canonical example problems with supposing your
trademarked name will appear correctly in the DNS.

"Postgres community", of course :) (More seriously,
"Postgress-queue-ell-dot-org", given that's how I pronounce it.)

Sure. (Although I'll point out that nslookup has been deprecated for
some years now, MSFT aside.)
