I went looking on PostgreSQL.Org for 'applications' using Pg but couldn't
figure out a method to search for them or if they are even avaliable.
Not sure if it should go in advocacy or somewhere else but a list of
applications that use (or can use) Pg would be useful for us loyal
roadies (sp? Ref: a very old Atari game about a rock-music group).
Would this make sense? I know when I go looking for applications that
use a database I look for PostgreSQL as either the main choice or as an
option. Heck if this makes sense I'll provide the some candidates:
SQL-Ledger,
Request-Tracker (RT),
Mapserver,
Teacup.

We have some of this already, if you look under sections like ER tools. Creating an overall master list of all applications might be interesting, but might get unwieldy if every open source project submitted there name to the list. Actually, this points to a much bigger overall need to integrate the 4 main postgresql web sites: www.postgresql.org techdocs.postgresql.org gborg.postgresql.org advocacy Currently, a newbie coming to www.postgresql.org would have *no idea* that these other, very useful, sites exist. They should be links in the left-hand navigation bar for www.postgresql.org, but this seems to be difficult to manage somehow. Justin, I have the sense that modifications to www.postgresql.org are either techincally difficult or politically sensitive, given the failure to get Marc to make the link to Techdocs more prominent. Actually, I'm not responsible for any of the web sites ... www.* is maintained by Vince ... the problem is that its 'menu system' wasn't well designed way back when for adding items :( No fault of Vince, I believe he just inherited it (it was so long ago, I don't remember who did the site itself) ... The key problem is that the menu items on the left of teh screen are all graphics, so adding/removing is a royal pain :( Vince has been working on a redesign of the site, its just slow with everything else on the go :(

How about we recruit some volunteers to help Vince? He shouldn't be doing this by himself, it'll never get finished ... Heck, we've got 8 volunteer web contributors for OpenOffice.org (you'll actually see some progress on the 2nd anniversary), seems like we could get one or two for Postgresql.org. -Josh Berkus

One thing that might help get more volunteers is to open up the www* mailing lists. I recently tried to subscribe to a couple of them (on a whim) and my membership was rejected. Hi all, The new "PostgreSQL Portal" site is being worked on, and you can see the efforts presently in development at: http://wwwdevel.postgresql.org The whole web team is assisting, and Robert keeps on offering to get the Jobs site up and running too (haven't forgotten that, just am seriously focused on other things at present. Shouldn't even be awake at the moment and answering this, really. Been awake nearly 80 hours (coffee and willpower, not into other means *at all*) and am now finding it difficult to actually fall sleep. Arrgh.) wow! this looks very promising, and actually pretty complete, though I don't know the depth of changes you plan to make with it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think the problem is finding people to work on things, its finding a way to give them managable chunks to work on. I know I've been looking for ways to avoid working on the phppgadmin rewrite lately and it seems like the postgres www site is good size php/pg project that might need people to help, but with no todo list or anything I don't think it's clear just how to help out. Still, you guys look like your making good progress, so I dont want to get in the way of that. Outstanding! The new portal not only looks good but has alot of function and puts the all the relevent information upfront.
