Hello,

thanks for buildig PgAdmin3 packages for Debian. Is there any reason to
maintain a separate repository instead of integrating it into official
Debian?

Kind regards

         Andreas.

Hi Andreas,

thank you for your mail and thank you for using pgAdmin3.
pgAdmin3 is built against wxWindows 2.5.x with particular patches applied. These libs are not in Debian at the moment.
During the end of last year Mickael Mesches suggested that we integrate wx build in the pgAdmin3 debian package itself.
Ididn't get time to finalise this piece of work but it's about to be done now (I mean I have something working, but I
needto do some cleaning and testing before I submit it)... My debian Sponsor (V. Renardias) will have a look at it as
soonas it is ready and this should then go into official debian.

One more time, thank you for your support.

Regards,
Raphaël

No thanks is necessary from your site if I'm using this fine program!

Ahh, this is a reason which is easy to understand.

So I guess no action is required on my side if I see which people are
involved here. ;-)

Perhaps a further idea: Ask the wxWindows maintainer if he might be able
to upload a version of 2.5 to experimental and provide pgAdmin3 there.
The advantage would be that more people will notice this fine project.

Kind regards and thanks for your fine work

       Andreas.

Not necessary but that's the least I can do... I promise I won't do it
again :))

Don't hesitate to make suggestions. That's true they are all great people!

That would be a solution but in fact, that's the first thing I asked Ron
Lee (debian wxWin maintainer) when I contacted him last summer. I also
proposed to produce a pgAdmin3 specific package of wxWindows that I
would have uploaded to experimental, but he asked me not to do so.

I'm sure everybody here is alright to say that you are welcome. Thanks
for your suggestions and I'll try to remember to contact you as soon as
pgAdmin3 will enter debian officially (hope this will come soon!)

Raphaël

Actually things around wx are becoming more and more frustrating. I
don't see a chance to get a wx version that's suitable for pgAdmin3
execution for a long time, i.e. the needed patches are stuck in the bug
tracker.
Additionally, wx core people are considering a rename of wxWindows to
wx[whateverItWillBe], because some Microsoft lawyer made a burp about
the name. As usual, there's no in-deep information about what's going
on, we're again presented the outcome of some internal thinking "we must
rename immediately".

I'd be glad if we could take a stock wx package and go, but we're
probably maintaining our own wxPGA forever. Sigh...

Regards,
Andreas

Well, besides the stupid naming stuff: According to my own experience
I think wx* people are kind of conservative. I personally prefere this
way of handling things because you can build onto a solid basis. But I
can't say anything about the problem in detail because I do not programm
with wx* - just maintaining some packages using this library.

Kind regards

           Andreas.
