Would you have any objections if we only distributed that version from now
on then?

BTW, I assume it would compile *properly* on a non-multibyte system... or
not?

Perhaps a beta test run would be in order?  ie. "anyone reading this,
please try out the multibyte version"  Simply to decrease the possiblity
if unseen problems..

No.

It would compile properly but the binary may be ineffective unless it
is compiled on a multibyte system strangely.
