Yes, this was it, thank you. I've been reworking a whole bunch of things 
to make these tests portable between DBs and totally lost the 
session-wide transaction isolation. This behavior disappears with:

SET SESSION CHARACTERISTICS AS TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE;
