newbie needs help seting up for gentoo

hi all i'm after some help setting up postgresql as ive never done it
before and the gentoo way is a little different from the docs 

under gentoo ive done the following steps

1 emerge postgresql {this creates the postgres user etc}
2 ebuild /./----/postgres.ebuild config {this sets up the sample databases
etc}
3 /etc/init.d/postgresql start {starts postmaster}

now under webmin i can add users tables hosts etc but i cant connect to
the database using pgacess or pgadmin  and nmap doesnt show any service
running

any help would be appreciated
