Oh, I had forgotten about that part of the problem.  Okay, just gotta
hold our noses and do it I guess.

(Just to be clear: the plan is CreateProcess in suspended state, then
write_backend_variables, then start the child's thread, right?
Otherwise seems you got a race condition.)
