I usually write a small shell script something like:
==================================================
#!/bin/sh
psql somedatabase <<EOQ
VACUUM this;
VACUUM that;
DELETE FROM someotherplace WHERE delete_this_record;
EOQ
==================================================
and so forth...
This makes the SQL quite nicely readable.
