I have the same problem as Victor

In my hands pg_ctl status just gives me

"pg_ctl: server is running (PID: 26644)"

The only way I know is to attempt to login to the database which
generates that scary error :-}

I'd also like to know if there was a better/nicer/proper way to determine
if the database was starting up
