Either set the environment variable PGDATESTYLE to 'Postgres,European' or
send the query
set datestyle='Postgres,European'
(I think SQL instead of Postgres works too)
eg:
quartz% printenv PGDATESTYLE
Postgres,European
rfb=# show datestyle;
NOTICE: DateStyle is Postgres with European conventions
SHOW VARIABLE
